i’m glad this little guy found his home!

I saw this on the news last night, and couldn’t get over this cat’s big, furry face. Here’s a link to one station’s article. It’s all over the news!

Hercules the cat had been missing from his owner for six months, but apparently has been doing quite well finding food for himself.

He had been sneaking food from a woman’s garage. I imagine this self-serve food supply caused him to put on a few pounds?

Yet had he not overindulged, he wouldn’t have gotten stuck in her doggie door and made national news. Overeating helped him find his owner!

My biggest cat, Joey, is a little over 13 pounds, and even that’s pretty big. If he gets any larger, he’s going on a diet!

OK, so you can’t really tell how big Joey is here, but it’s just a really silly photo. I caught him nested in the couch cushions sitting somewhat upright, licking his belly, and I started taking photos. And then he stretched forward, with his back paws in the air!

wish i was here

Well, maybe not right now, it’s a little too chilly. But when we were in the Outer Banks of North Carolina in July, it was wonderful. So, I wish I was there, and I wish it was July.

I took this picture on the deck of the beach house we rented over the summer. It is also set as my wallpaper on my computer at work.

Daily, I am reminded of those evenings we spent relaxing on the deck, preparing to watch the sun set.

It makes me happy.

too bad they don’t have a frequent customers card

My round-trip commute is about 50 miles a day, mostly on a highway.

In July 2004, I bought a new car, replacing my 10-year-old Geo Prizm.

On the way to work one day, with only 1,500 miles on my new car, a pebble hit my windshield just right, causing a small chip.

Being a brand new car, I was anxious to get it fixed. I called the glass repair company, who sent their mobile repair unit to my office to fill the crack that day.

Maybe I made it a year before the next rock hit. I went through the same process, leaving another faint scar on my front windshield.

The third strike happened a few months ago. We were on our way home from work, when a very large object struck near the top of the passenger side. We don’t know what it was — a rock? Chunk of concrete? Piece of a car?

Whatever it was, my husband (the passenger) wonders why he didn’t duck — if cars didn’t have safety glass, it surely would have impaled him!

The resulting fist-sized starburst + cracks in every direction required installation of a new windshield (the mobile repair unit can do that at my office, too). I was happy to have a blemish-free windshield again!

That lasted until today, when a little sedan sped past me on the shoulder (he should have merged behind me). As he swerved passed me and changed lanes, he kicked up yet another pebble that created a coin-sized starburst.

Enter glass repair company, again. That makes four repairs in the two and a half years I have owned my car.

Actually, I have needed five glass repairs in the past three years. Shortly before its retirement, the Prizm needed a crack repair. (I wanted a few more months out of it, and wouldn’t have been able to do that if the crack spread across the window!)

I’m just starting to wonder … is my particular car model prone to rock attacks, or do I just have really bad luck?

show and tell: laura veirs

I’ve been wanting to start introducing music to my blog, and now’s as good a time as any! I’m not going to go into full-blown reviews, rather, I’d just like to share things I love. Maybe you’ll love them too!

My husband introduced me to Laura Veirs last year, when he bought me her CD Year of Meteors. He often buys me music he thinks I’ll like, and is usually right.

I quickly fell in love this CD, and bought as may of her other albums as I could. (Her first self-titled, self-recorded album is sold out.)

Sample verse, from “Icebound Stream” on Carbon Glacier:

watch, I can flash across the sky
a lightning bolt from up on high
and I can crash into myself
now a flower blooms in reverse
and a song takes back a verse
a photograph fades to white

Laura’s style spans many styles: a little country, a little folky, a little jazzy, a little rock. She sings clever lyrics, creating a vivid image for each song with a clear, honest voice.

She toured with Colin Meloy of The Decemberists last year. Perhaps it was due to this tour pairing, she is featured in the song “Yankee Bayonet (I Will Be Home Then)” on The Decemberists’ album The Crane Wife.

Check out some samples on her site, or a live show through KCRW archives of “Morning Becomes Eclectic” (there’s also another show from 2003, which I just realized was there!).

Enjoy!
