nyc weekend

Yes, it’s Thursday and I’m just now catching up from the weekend!

I went with a group of friends into New York City to celebrate two of their birthdays. We’re all friends from the chorale, thus a musical trip was in order!

We took the train in Friday night and were greeted with an amazing view from the hotel.

Then we met up with the rest of the gals, who had arrived earlier in the day. We enjoyed a great dinner at an Italian restaurant. I can’t remember the name, but it looked like this above my seat:

After a champagne toast back at the hotel, we called it a night. Well, we might have been toasting for a little while. It had gotten pretty late at that point!

We had to get moving kind of early on Saturday. We were going to the opera!

Part of our group bought tickets, but four of us opted for the $20 standing room only tickets. They went on sale at 10 a.m., so we went to the opera house after breakfast.

Yes, we had to stand for three hours, but we had an unobstructed view, it sounded great, and we saved $200!

I couldn’t take pictures in the opera house, but did sneak a couple of the light fixtures.

We had another great dinner after the show, followed by drinks at the hotel bar. And birthday cupcakes from Magnolia Bakery. Yum!

We started Sunday off with a delicious brunch.

And then wandered around the city until it was time to see Wicked!

What an amazing show. I highly recommend it!

We took a late train home so we had time for dinner after the matinee. We got to the restaurant just in time for the Super Bowl. None of us cared all that much, but I got to watch as I won the first quarter in my office pool!

For dessert, I got a Dark and Stormy float. If you didn’t know, a Dark and Stormy is rum and ginger beer. And delicious. They added rum raisin ice cream to make the float. Yum!

Then we grabbed our bags from the hotel, hopped in a cab, and headed to the train station.

Nice visiting you, NY!

After a long drive, we’re home again. All of my photos are from our fantastic week at the beach!

We’ve been staying on the Pamlico Sound (North Carolina’s Outer Banks) for a few years now, but that night was the first time we’ve ever seen the sun reach the horizon. There’s usually clouds/haze that make it vanish early. It was our last night of vacation, and it ended perfectly.

Now that I’m back home … I’ve got a lot of catching up to do!

beach day one

July 20-26, 2008

Hooray for vacation!

We had a very long day of driving, but it was worth it. Here are photos from day one.

scenes from jamaica

I’m back! And while I’m happy to be home and reunited with my kitties, I’m sad it’s over so soon.

This was our third time to Jamaica, all three times in the Ocho Rios area. I basically just look for the best deal, so all three have been different resorts as well. This time we spent the week at Sandals Grande Ocho Rios.

We met lots of great people to hang out with, drank lots of rum (and brought lots of rum home — who wants a drink?), and had a lot of fun!

Anyway, I’m combining my Weekly Winners post with my vacation summary. Enjoy!

The Beach
the beach

Our favorite place to relax. Plus, the wheeled chairs went a notch higher than the other chairs, much more comfortable to read that way!

We had great weather the first half of the week, and then three days of on-and-off rain! We sat on the beach anyway — and tried to get under one of the huts. They didn’t have enough; I also spent some time reading under a resort-provided umbrella!

Boating

Unfortunately, we never made it out on any of the boats, or any activity really. By the time we were ready to start doing something other than read/relax, the weather turned on us!

Finally, due to being away, I have no kitty photos like I usually include. However, I do have an “animal series” to finish out my photo-tour!

Along the side of the road, taken from the bus window. The driver told us the goats aren’t wild, they belong to people that let them roam during the day. They go home at night!

Well, that’s all for now. Back to work tomorrow.

if you need me, i’ll be over here

If you need me, I'll be over here ...

Or somewhere near here. This photo is from last year’s vacation.

I’m heading out in less than four hours. I should really be trying to get some sleep. Due to a strange schedule, we had tickets to a 10p.m. concert tonight (Dan Wilson and Kathleen Edwards), so I haven’t gotten all my stuff together yet!

Anyway, that’s all for now. Just wanted to check in. I’ll be back next week!
