surreptitious sundays

The cats get fed twice a day, breakfast and dinner. There’s dry food out all the time, because they can be trusted not to overindulge.

Every day during the week, breakfast is around 8 am, including Saturdays since I’m up to run.

But on Sundays, we usually sleep in.

That is, if Jeter lets us. He’s a sneaky one, that Jeter cat.

This morning, his choice method was walking across my dresser and finding things to intentionally knock on the floor.

Sure, if I was a bit neater, there would be fewer objects to knock down … but, he’d probably still find a way. I think some items were removed from a basket!

Other times, he’s started rustling with bags in my closet or climbing my husband’s taller dresser and finding things to knock down or crinkle.

When all else fails, he’ll come sit on my chest and wait for me to get up.

My dresser’s tousling was enough today, he was fed right on time, 8 am.

Then I went back to sleep!

This morning, it took a little longer for me to shut off the alarm.

I awoke as it went off, but could not immediately move. After wriggling out of bed and stopping the horrible beeping, I looked over to confirm that not one, but two cats had trapped me under the covers.

It is not unusual to become trapped with one cat on either side, above the blankets. But I thought it was sweet this morning that Jeter and Posey were sleeping side by side. They snuggled all the time as kittens, but nowadays, they usually just tolerate each other.

Looking at the two cats curled up on the bed, I wondered why I wasn’t in pain. I must have been contorted; it didn’t look like there was room for my legs!

I wanted to take a picture of them still sitting there, but figured they would have moved by the time I got the camera (and the flash would disturb my husband who was still trying to sleep, anyway).

Therefore, here is my “artistic” rendering of how we must have been sleeping:

Comfy, huh?

i’m glad this little guy found his home!

I saw this on the news last night, and couldn’t get over this cat’s big, furry face. Here’s a link to one station’s article. It’s all over the news!

Hercules the cat had been missing from his owner for six months, but apparently has been doing quite well finding food for himself.

He had been sneaking food from a woman’s garage. I imagine this self-serve food supply caused him to put on a few pounds?

Yet had he not overindulged, he wouldn’t have gotten stuck in her doggie door and made national news. Overeating helped him find his owner!

My biggest cat, Joey, is a little over 13 pounds, and even that’s pretty big. If he gets any larger, he’s going on a diet!

OK, so you can’t really tell how big Joey is here, but it’s just a really silly photo. I caught him nested in the couch cushions sitting somewhat upright, licking his belly, and I started taking photos. And then he stretched forward, with his back paws in the air!

A few days my husband walked into the kitchen, and exclaimed “They’re doing it again!”

He was referring to two of our cats, Jeter and Posey, sitting on the floor like proper kitties. Except they each had one paw up, as if to shake hands.

Jeter and Posey were born to an alley cat in Washington, DC. We still lived in DC when we adopted them, as tiny kittens.

When they were younger they hung out together a lot — often snuggling in the cat tree or napping on the same chair. They don’t do that much anymore, but, they still get along. I actually think they hang out more when we’re not looking.

It’s not unusual that two litter mates would be buddies. But, they often do the same thing, at the same time. Like their positioning on the kitchen floor. Or the photo above, sitting on/under the kitchen table.

I think this one was the weirdest:

Both cats were napping while lying contorted on their backs. (Posey – on the right – woke up and moved a little) Those two identical chairs were in different rooms; the photos were taken at the same time. I grabbed the camera after I saw them!

I have more examples that I’m sure will come into play since I can’t stop signing myself up for daily blogging competitions!
