what’s that smell?

Ah, spring is in the air.

Flowers are blooming, birds are chirping, socks are burning …

Yes, that’s right. I said socks are burning.

Tonight in Eastport, it is the annual sock-burning celebration. (Eastport is a part of Annapolis that kind of created its own entity.)

It is a tradition started by sailors, signifying the end of winter. Being on a river, Annapolis is a big sailing town.

While I find this a rather interesting and amusing tradition, I won’t be celebrating just yet. My toes are waiting for the weather to be consistently warm!

Enough of this 68F one day, 43F the next …

surreptitious sundays

The cats get fed twice a day, breakfast and dinner. There’s dry food out all the time, because they can be trusted not to overindulge.

Every day during the week, breakfast is around 8 am, including Saturdays since I’m up to run.

But on Sundays, we usually sleep in.

That is, if Jeter lets us. He’s a sneaky one, that Jeter cat.

This morning, his choice method was walking across my dresser and finding things to intentionally knock on the floor.

Sure, if I was a bit neater, there would be fewer objects to knock down … but, he’d probably still find a way. I think some items were removed from a basket!

Other times, he’s started rustling with bags in my closet or climbing my husband’s taller dresser and finding things to knock down or crinkle.

When all else fails, he’ll come sit on my chest and wait for me to get up.

My dresser’s tousling was enough today, he was fed right on time, 8 am.

Then I went back to sleep!

maybe this is why i like pop-tarts so much

When I was growing up, we always had “healthy” breakfast cereals in the house. Cheerios, Raisin Bran, Chex, etc. As long as sugar wasn’t one of the first ingredients, it was OK.

During a summer vacation, we rented an apartment in Maine with a small kitchen so we didn’t always have to go out to eat. I was probably around 8 or 9, my brother would have been 4 or 5.

A year or two ago, my mother asked me if I remembered that trip. My husband laughed at my reply:

“Yeah! We had Lucky Charms!”

It was a treat we were allowed to get while staying at that apartment.

My husband laughed harder when my mom asked my brother if he remembered that trip. My brother wasn’t there when I gave my reply. And since my mother was quite amused by what I got out of our travels across the country, she wanted to ask him as well.

“Yeah! We had Lucky Charms!”

they must not have seen the “no outlet” sign

Because a cul-de-sac is really not a good street to turn down when trying to evade the police.

Our neighbor let us know that on Friday evening, a high-speed chase ended in our driveway. Multiple police cars were chasing a suspect SUV. (Fortunately we weren’t home yet; if we had been, my car could have been smashed!)

The driver ran off into my neighbor’s back yard, and police grabbed the passenger out of the car and pointed a gun at him. They also captured the driver that ran off on foot. (There would have been no place to go; my neighbor’s yard backs to a creek.)

I looked it up in the police beat today, it was a drug arrest. The car was initially pulled over because the taillights were out, but the driver sped away when the officer approached. After apprehension, the passenger had three grams of crack cocaine.

Hmm, drug arrests, raccoon house invaders

Really, we live in a nice neighborhood!
