list day 2

This morning, I got up bright and early to set up and run a water stop for a local marathon. I’ve got friends on the race committee, so we always help out. Being a frequent recipient of the water and Gatorade handed out, I like to give back when I’m not a participant!

We made it fun. I made a bunch of mix CDs (I don’t have speakers loud enough to use with MP3 players), and we were in costume for a Toga Party theme. I made mine out of pink cheetah-print fabric!

We were outside manning the stop until the last runner came through, nearly seven hours later. I was exhausted, having stayed up a bit too late finishing my mix CDs. After a nice warm shower, I fell asleep for a few hours!

So, that’s why today’s list is one I could come up with quickly!

Countries I’ve visited:

  1. Canada
  2. Bahamas
  3. Italy
  4. Mexico
  5. St. Lucia
  6. Jamaica

list day 1

Since I like torturing myself, I’ve signed up for NaBloPoMo again. It’s happening monthly now, with optional themes. The theme for March being Lists.

If I was organized enough to realize that today was the first day of March prior to, say, 11:45 p.m., I would have come up with a list of lists that I’d be tackling this month. But, I nearly forgot as it is!

So we have an easy list tonight.

Projects that need to be done around my house:

  1. Replace roof
  2. Paint exterior
  3. Finish painting kitchen cabinets
  4. Get new kitchen floors
  5. Get new kitchen counters
  6. Make living room look like adults live here
  7. Rake leaves
  8. Paint / decorate bedroom
  9. Paint / decorate guest room
  10. Paint / update master bathroom

Note that not all items are to be completed by me, but I’ll do what I can. The list could go on … ah, the joys of being a homeowner!

fourteen years

I wouldn’t exactly call it an anniversary, since neither one of us really remembers exactly when it happened. I’m pretty sure, though, that it was February 27 or 28, 1994.

Days prior, I broke up with my high school boyfriend. He was still back home in his senior year of high school while I was a college freshman. We made it through the first semester, but I was becoming a different person.

I never cheated on high school boyfriend, but we were growing apart. Or, rather, I was. I felt terrible; I had never been the dumper before, I’d always been dumped. But, it had to be done.

Anyway, I suppose we could say this photo, taken December 1993, is foreshadowing. I was still 18 here, and he was almost 20.

1993

There was always something between us. It just waited for the right moment.

Anyway, those early days weren’t easy. That boy was stupid and afraid, and broke up with me a few times during the first two years.

1994

I really couldn’t tell you if we were together or not in the above picture, probably taken spring 1994. We always remained friends. And I remained hopeful that it wasn’t truly over.

The turmoil ended when we got back together for good in October 1995. He graduated in 1996, but I still had another year to go.

1996

The photo above was taken after his graduation.

He got a job and stayed at home with his Mom (two-hour drive from campus) to wait out my senior year.

1997

Above, we are are at a party on campus in 1997. He was able to visit often, even though his cousin/mechanic told him the wheel on his 1988 Ford Escort could fall off at any time!

It didn’t fall off, and his mom sold the car for a couple hundred dollars after he moved down to the DC area. He moved a couple months before I graduated and stayed with friends. We found an apartment in a suburb in Maryland when I was visiting / on an interview. I got the job, too.

We lived in that one-bedroom apartment for a little over a year. When we needed more space, we moved into a two-bedroom apartment in DC.

1999

Above is a 1999 photo taken on our first trip to Hatteras Island. We were invited to join one of my co-workers and her friends/family. While not with the same group, we’ve been going ever since!

While living in DC, we went out to happy hours at least weekly. It was nice to be able to stumble home! It was after one of those walks back to our apartment that he asked me to marry him. I wasn’t expecting that at all.

He didn’t have a ring, since he figured I’d probably want to pick that out. I suppose had we discussed marriage, he might have known what I wanted, but it certainly wouldn’t have been such a surprise!

2000

The photo above, from 2000, was taken the night we announced our engagement to our friends. It was convenient that one of them brought a camera to happy hour!

We were engaged for about a year. Here’s an outtake from our engagement photos, from 2001:

2001

A few months after the wedding, we bought our house and moved again, back to Maryland (though, considerably farther from DC!).

Where we lived happily ever after …

guess who’s going on a diet?

This guy!

joey

Joey’s always been our biggest cat, but he’s raised the bar. At his annual vet appointment this weekend, he weighed a whopping 14 pounds, 7 ounces. Yikes!

See how he’s hanging over the ledge in that photo? Do cats have love handles?

I think he was a little over 13 pounds last year. That’s a big difference for a small animal. He does have a big frame, but he should probably be closer to 12 pounds.

I’m going to start gradually switching his food to the “weight control” version. I’ll do weigh-ins periodically to see if it’s working.

I wish I could put him on a leash and take him running with me. I think it’d be hilarious if he’d go along with it … but more likely, he’d pull me up a tree!

He usually hides under the bed, but the bedroom door was closed and he panicked. He was up there for hours, just to make sure it was safe!
