and the thriv shirt winner is …

OK, I didn't pull names from a hat. I figured my GreenLiteBites bowl from Fitbloggin' was an appropriate substitute!

RunningLaur!

It’s an extra special day for her, because she just ran her first marathon today. Congratulations! (Please send me your mailing address and shirt size.)

For everybody else, there’s still a chance to win! Just sign up for the thriv1st monthly newsletter. They give away 50 shirts a month to the people on this list!

around and around and around

Tonight was my second week of 400s on the track. It’s technically our group’s third week, but I did my first speed workout on the treadmill when I was in Jamaica. It was *much* easier on the treadmill!

Last week, it was pretty warm out, and we had a lot of company on the track. The walkers were fine, but you really had to look out for little kids on bikes! We had 10×400 repeats on the schedule, with a 300-meter recovery. My goal time is 2:02.

  1. 1:48 (oops!)
  2. 2:00
  3. 2:02
  4. 2:04
  5. 2:02
  6. 2:03
  7. 2:02
  8. 2:03
  9. 2:02
  10. 1:55

Well, I missed a few, but not by much. I’m pretty sure I had to change lanes to avoid a collision on that 2:04 loop!

Tonight we had 12×400 / 200-meter recovery … but it was SO much easier. It was kind of rainy today, and cool — only in the 50s. We had the track to ourselves!

It wasn’t really raining at all, either … during our intervals.

  1. 1:53 (I am NOT good at finding my pace …)
  2. 1:57
  3. 2:00
  4. 2:00
  5. 1:57
  6. 2:00
  7. 1:58
  8. 1:59
  9. 2:00
  10. 1:59
  11. 1:59
  12. 1:55

I was feeling the fatigue in my legs, but I was able to keep up the pace. The cooler temperature definitely helped, but at times we were running into the wind so it was tough!

After a short cool-down walk, we started to run back downtown, and the rain started coming down. That would have felt great if it had been a hot night, but it was pretty cold! By the time I got to my car 11 minutes later, I was soaked.

And then it promptly stopped raining.

There were only four of us out tonight — two other runners and our coach. They’re all fast, so what might have been a jog  for them was pretty fast for me.  Our 1.27-mile warm up was at a 9:06 average, and the cool-down was at a 9:37 average.

It was a great night!

May 2-8, 2010

Well, I’ve been home from Jamaica for about a week now.  Some photos have been posted already, and I do have some more that I’ll get up here soon. I got home a bit too late to get my Weekly Winners done last week!

The following photos were taken last Sunday, on my last walk around the resort before checking out.

giveaway: win a thriv shirt!

Remember my awesome thriv shirt from  Fitbloggin’?

Would you like to win one of your own?

Well, it won’t have the Fitbloggin’ logo, but will be the same super-soft shirt made with a blend of organic cotton and bamboo. I sure wish I had more of these in my collection! (Why yes, I could buy myself more gear from their new online store … but I won’t let myself until I can clear more space in my overflowing closet and dressers!)

The nice folks at thriv are offering a shirt (either women’s or men’s) to one lucky reader. Unfortunately, shipping is only available in the U.S.  I’m sorry, international friends!

To enter, simply leave a comment and tell me about your favorite workout gear. Clothing, gadget, whatever.  What can’t you live without?

One comment per user, please.

But would you like another chance to win while helping out a good cause?

On May 23, I will be running the Maryland Half Marathon, benefiting the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center.

This sounds like a great cause and I’d love to help out.  I was going to give varying giveaway entries based on amount donated, but I’ve changed my mind. Anybody that donates any amount on my contribution page gets THREE extra entries. If you blog under a different name, email me  (see sidebar for address) and let me know who you are!

I wasn’t going to do retweet entries … but I want to spread the word!  I’ll count up to two retweets per person (one extra entry each). Please leave one comment to let me know to look for your tweets.  I’ll find them as  long as you reference @merrymishaps. Please link back to this page.

The contest will close on Friday, May 14 at 11:59pm EDT. Winner will be chosen by the scientific name-pulled-from-hat method by Sunday, May 16.

Good luck!

did somebody say challenge?

I’ve found that while I do have a lot of motivation on my own to keep running (hello 20-mile treadmill run!) … I still like a little push to make me work a little harder.

The racing team has been great for getting me to run hills and speed work, and I just finished a four-week Core Challenge that had me adding ab workouts to my routine.

Perfect timing for something new. Enter the 25 Days of Push-Ups Challenge!

I started the challenge today, and I hope to do my push-ups at least three times a week. I’ll add more if my arms can handle it!

I decided to follow challenge hostess Julie’s workout suggestion with the following:

  1. Standard push-ups
  2. Diamond push-ups
  3. Triceps push-ups
  4. Staggered push-ups
  5. Side plank push-ups

Julie explained each exercise with photos, so visit the challenge page for instructions. I decided I’d start with five of each, with 10 of the staggered and side plank push-ups to keep each side even. After a brief break I decided to do a second identical set.

I was definitely getting tired, and by the end there was very little pushing-up! Well, I know I picked a good starting point — it was challenging but not completely impossible.

I took some ‘before’ photos tonight that I’m going to hang on to until the end of the month. Hopefully there will be a noticeable difference!
