Early in my freshman year, I decided to join the newspaper staff and went to their recruiting meeting.
I had actually planned on joining the yearbook staff since that’s what I did in high school, but they weren’t very active. I ran into some people from the newspaper while looking for the yearbook office, and I guess they convinced me to switch …
The first time I saw him was at this meeting — he was the Features editor. And he was one of those freaky “alternative” people. Being fresh out of a preppy high school, his appearance intimidated me. He wasn’t the type of person I usually hung out with. I figured it’d be OK, it was just a club.
Well, the weekly paper was put together between classes and late at night. We spent a lot of time together, and I quickly became friends with most of the staffers. He was part of that circle, too. And as I got to know him, I wasn’t intimidated anymore.
Now, I had a preppy high school boyfriend back home (I was a year older than him). But while he was still in high school, I was becoming a new person. We were growing apart, and there was someone else in my sight.
Oh, I tried to make it work. High School Boyfriend even came to visit. Boy, was that awkward — different worlds collided. I don’t think the relationship lasted too much longer.
But as soon as that one ended, a new one began. (click that link to see photos of us spanning 14 years!)

Aw, that’s sweet! I loved the pictures over the years, too. Cute couple at every stage.
