what’s that smell?

Ah, spring is in the air.

Flowers are blooming, birds are chirping, socks are burning …

Yes, that’s right. I said socks are burning.

Tonight in Eastport, it is the annual sock-burning celebration. (Eastport is a part of Annapolis that kind of created its own entity.)

It is a tradition started by sailors, signifying the end of winter. Being on a river, Annapolis is a big sailing town.

While I find this a rather interesting and amusing tradition, I won’t be celebrating just yet. My toes are waiting for the weather to be consistently warm!

Enough of this 68F one day, 43F the next …

  1. Maybe it’s gained popularity?

Not sure how long you’ve been gone, I’ve only known about it for a few years. Then again, I’ve only lived here for six years!

  2. I grew up there my whole life, then went to college at 18, came home for about 2 years after and then moved to Denver in 1994. So, I *have* been gone for a while.

But I emailed the link to my mom who has lived there since the 60s and she has never heard of it either! AND, my mom and dad were big-time sailors! But she has been a homebody for the last 20 years, so I am also not really surprised. 🙂
