When I was growing up, we always had “healthy” breakfast cereals in the house. Cheerios, Raisin Bran, Chex, etc. As long as sugar wasn’t one of the first ingredients, it was OK.
During a summer vacation, we rented an apartment in Maine with a small kitchen so we didn’t always have to go out to eat. I was probably around 8 or 9, my brother would have been 4 or 5.
A year or two ago, my mother asked me if I remembered that trip. My husband laughed at my reply:
“Yeah! We had Lucky Charms!”
It was a treat we were allowed to get while staying at that apartment.
My husband laughed harder when my mom asked my brother if he remembered that trip. My brother wasn’t there when I gave my reply. And since my mother was quite amused by what I got out of our travels across the country, she wanted to ask him as well.
“Yeah! We had Lucky Charms!”
Some of my best memories growing up were trips with my aunts and grandparents, where I was allowed to eat sugared cereal!
That, and when I call back memories of my aunt’s house at lunch, I can taste white bread sandwiches with sliced cheese and potato chips.
Now 25 years later, my 13 year old begs to go to her grandmother’s house on Friday nights because my mothers serves them Bagel Bites and tollhouse cookies. What the hell happened to shredded wheat and shoe Sunshine raisin bars which passed for cookies when I was a child?
